Southern Comfort

And I am not talking about whiskey!

I had never tried grits until I moved to North Carolina. Let's face it, the name doesn't sound appealing, and on their own they aren't very pretty to look at. My first experience was with shrimp and grits and that's when I fell in love. Every so often I cook some grits for breakfast. So yummy with an egg. What would have made this breakfast over the top? I little crumbled bacon, but that's not something I keep on hand on a regular basis. A sprinkling of chopped green onion added a nice fresh flavor. Served in my favorite Ron Philbeck bowl, those grits are looking quite attractive.

Jeff and I ended our day with a drive into nearby Asheboro for early voting. It's great to get it done with no long lines. Early voting times coincided with the exhibition at the North Carolina Potters Conference. The gallery was jammed packed with people. In no time at all, nearly all of presenter Tony Clennell's pots were sold. Lot's of red dots on the other presenters work as well. I would have liked to attend the conference this year, but money is tight. Maybe next year.

  1. I hadn't thought of early voting, but that's a great idea. I've been wanting one of Ron's clothesline pieces for a while. I need to look again. Your breakfast looks good!

    1. Ron is making the clothesline pieces anymore :-(. Though he may have a few left in stock. I am glad I got a couple of mugs, plate, bowl, and cup when I did! He new work is really nice too.

  2. wish I could have gone, those are some nice pots, would have been a treat to see Tony's pots in person. we have a local mill here that grinds grits and I got some coarse ground but have only used them for breading which was too coarse for that, so I'll have to try making some grits. Had them at a restaurant in Clarkesville and they were cooked very well. breakfast grits with raisins and nuts and fruit maybe, blueberries, that's it. will give it a try.

  3. I have tried grits too, and think that they probably depend on lots of butter and salt to be palatable, right?

    1. They don't need lots of butter, but onion and/or garlic add lots of flavor. Also, I think that regular grits, not instant have more flavor.

  4. Grits are delicious with cheese and poblano peppers also. I didn’t think about adding garlic or onion.

The show looks great, wish I could have gone.

  5. Saw Jeff Friday but missed you. That crowd was a bit too much for me.

    1. It was a bit too much for me too. I would have liked to have been able to see the pots without all the people!
