Kitchen Facelift

Jeff had one day to recover from jet lag and then it was back to house renovations. The kitchen is our top priority before we move in completely. First order was to remove all the cabinet doors. No easy task, since all of the hinges had been painted over. It was a chore to get them off and when we paint and replace them, they will get all new hinges... never to be painted again.

The interiors of the cabinets are three different colors, pink, green, and off-white. They are absolutely disgusting, inside and out. We made the decision to replace the countertop, sink, and cooktop. Last month we bought a dishwasher on sale, and that has already been delivered, just not installed. The countertop will be something inexpensive that will coordinate with the island. It's not financially possible for us to do it all right now. At this point we are just looking for clean and neat.

This house has a large living room and a good size den. We only had a chair for the den which was going to make it a rather sparsely furnished room. A neighbor potter is moving and she had a sofa for sale at a great price, so we snatched it up!

It's a sofa-bed and was a b!tch to move! It had to come down a short flight of stairs at her house. Thankfully at our house it only had to be moved through the carport and into the first room. A few new pillows from IKEA and the sofa looks great. This is the room with the lovely wagon wheel light...

That light really has to go. I am just not into the wild west decor.

  1. I don't know..... That wagon wheel light has some charm..... How often do you see those anymore :-)
Have you looked at the new paints for countertops? They have come a long way

    1. Friends of mine painted their countertops and it looks pretty good and seems to holding up. Our issue is this really ugly spot behind the faucet that is very moldy and has a piece of laminate glued over a portion of the molded backsplash. Jeff thinks that they covered a spot that may have rotted.
Last night while when we collapsed after moving in the sofa, we stared up at the wagon wheel light bounced around some crazy ideas... one was making new glass globes out of beer bottles ;-)

  2. Having spent yesterday groaning at the opinions of customers (always right, remember!) looking at the things I was trying to sell at the yard sale, I am so totally aware of the taste we each have, so you should definitely get rid of the wagon wheel fixture. Lovely cabinets and shelves...storage will be sweet when it's all done! I've got a big hide-a-bed couch too. So heavy moving!

  3. that looks like a really nice sized kitchen, there are some really nice laminate choices in counter tops now, shop around for the best price, that's what we put in our kitchen in Florida and Tuolumne and both times the buyers said they loved them. bring samples home to check them in your kitchen because the lighting makes all the difference on how they look in the space. also sometimes you can get sinks and other items on craigslist for a song, some even brand new.and habitat for humanity has some remodeling bargains lots of times.

don't give that light away, someone will pay a bundle for it, you could sell it on craigslist; the one we had when I was growing up was outfitted with lanterns that were electrified and hung with rope from a pitched ceiling that was knotty pine and the walls too.

  4. I did this 20 years ago when we moved in here. Big job but it saves a ton over replacing them.

    1. Jeff likes the paneling, I don't. At least it's in good condition... I guess I will learn to live with it.

  7. I imagine your kitchen cabinets are full of handcrafted pots just like mine. You might want to leave the doors off and show off the wares. It’ll save you time, paint and hinges too.

    1. We are considering leaving some of the upper doors off to show off pottery. We really only need to hide pantry items and the not so pretty cookware.
