evolving

This week I took my carved bowls in a new direction. I threw a whole mess of bowls and couple of platters, with wide, thick rims, and then slipped and carved them.

As I worked on these today, I was thinking about glazing. My first thought was shino interior with gloss green rim and exterior... which means a lot of careful waxing and perhaps stressful glazing maneuvers. After contemplating that a bit, I have considered glazing them completely with the gloss green.

Would that make them boring?
Opinions encouraged and welcomed.

  1. The carving is gorgeous...so just plain one color, maybe some bare slip & clay if you feel like waxing...or not. The breaking glaze in carved areas will be a nice surprise probably.

  2. If the glaze breaks nicely on texture, then a single color would be great.

  3. I think you and Jeff know how to do the math on this.If you spend and extra 15 minutes glazing can you get an extra $15 or sell them twice as fast?? They look great.

  4. What more do you need than the clay color, the slip color and green!

  5. I love your shino and turquoise combination, but the green only certainly wouldn't be boring with the carving. Nice bowls by the way!

  6. The contrast between glaze over clay and glaze over slipped area will be all the variation you will need. Your green is a great glaze so I think they will look terrific.

  7. Thanks for the input!
I just might go with solid green this time. I am not really into the bare clay/slip thing, it doesn't go with the rest of my work. I need these for upcoming shows and need to keep a cohesive look.

  8. Love the carving and think the one color should work fine. It will be a different tone over the slip and that along with the carving texture will add to the interest.
If you wanted another color without a lot of time spent waxing, etc., maybe a yellow/gold version of the green glaze sprayed just on the center of the bottom over the inner green, might work.

  10. The carving is very pretty, I don't think those bowls could be boring. What I would do is try some one way and some the other to see what you like. Sometimes the extra work is worth it.

  11. I would love them either way! Maybe test one with the two colors and do the rest in the green. That way you have something to compare.
