Good Neighbors

This week we had new neighbors move in next door.

They are horses!

The big red barn has been used for storing hay in recent years. This week, the farmer that is leasing the property moved some horses to the barn.

I hope that they stay. Their fenced area abuts our land near the new kiln shed. What better company when firing a kiln than some beautiful horses. 

Mud Season

We are finally experiencing some warmer temperatures. Since it arrived on the heels of snow and rain, mud season is in full swing.

Monday was spent glazing and loading the gas kiln. It felt good to be outside, even if it meant trekking through the mud. Since we lack a spray booth, this is our outdoor set up.

It works quite well, as long as there is no wind.

The day flew by quickly and as the sun was setting I decided to grab my camera and venture out for a walk around the property. My neighbors cows are always a treat to see. 

I don't know much, or really anything, about raising cows, so I am not sure why these calves are in this little pen. They were all laying down and quickly stood up when I approached. I will try not to think that they might be being raised for veal. 

This piece of farm equipment makes me think "bionic bug".

Today's weather forecast predicts temps in the mid 70's. More rain is on the way, so I think the mud is going to stick around awhile.

Pigs on the run...

The piggy bank orders are piling in for the holiday season. I spend many nights making them in my sleep. This morning I poured my coffee and as I was heading to the fridge to put away the milk, what did I see outside the window??... a PIGLET. A real live piglet. Now I do live next door to a farm, but this farmer raises cows and goats. The farmer's shepherd was out there trying to round up this pig, when along came a small dog that looked like a springer spaniel. Everyone gave each other a few sniffs then the pig came trotting through the field into our yard. The dog quickly followed.

Of course I HAD to grab my camera and run out in my pajamas to snap some photos!

Once outside I realized that I shouldn't be getting too close to a strange dog and his piglet buddy. Believe it or not, I used to be a runner and about 12 years ago I was bitten by a springer spaniel while out on the road. Since then I am a little afraid of strange dogs.

I decided that the zoom on my camera would be a good idea. The dog ran ahead and into the woods, with piglet close behind.

I hope they made it home safe and sound, the Pottery Highway is a busy road.
Now it's time for me to get to work on my own piggies so that they will make it to their new homes in time for Christmas.
