Slowly coasting along...

When the holiday rush was over I found two coasters that were forgotten. They were wrapped in plastic and still leather hard. I had been trying to talk myself into braving the cold studio and getting some work done. Opportunity was calling my name! I got out there, applied some slip and once they were dry enough, carved a design. I was so proud of myself for finally getting something done. Jeff laughed because there were only two, and I wimped out with a simple design. Cut me some slack... it was really cold in the studio!

After the bisque firing I applied liquid wax to the rims and then filled in the carving with Amaco's Jet Black Velvet Underglaze.

Once the underglaze was dry, I wiped over it with a damp sponge. I am not too fussy with the clean up. Most won't show through the glaze. When it does, I don't mind the "blurry" look.

I poured the glaze on to the coasters, quickly pouring off the excess. If any spots get on the rim I just wipe it up with a damp sponge.

They came out of the kiln on Monday, so now I have a complete set of........TWO.

With our new heater in the studio we should be able to be more productive on a regular basis this month. Coasters are on my "to make" list.

PS... Thought you might like to see how we treat the backs of our coasters. Cork buttons with adhesive backing. They come in a large roll and are relatively inexpensive. I believe they came from Widgetco.

and now for something completely different...

After two posts about brown pots, I thought you might be ready for some Spring green!

Have a great weekend!

I like to jump right in...

I am really bad about doing tests. I have a habit of experimenting directly on pots. Like these mugs...

I brushed on a black Amaco underglaze and wiped it off. The plan is to glaze the lower half in Temple White and the interior and upper half in gloss green. I want to see how the black looks under the white because I have all those little porcelain dishes that I want to use this technique on. Who knows how the green will look in combination with the white and black! They went in the kiln tonight and we fire tomorrow. I should have results by Sunday, so stay tuned!

Found this photo on my camera tonight...

worlds largest burrito...

Seriously
You have to agree that this thing is gargantuan!

Jeff and I are playing hosts this weekend to our friend Wendy from NH and her friend AnnMarie who is a student in Raleigh, NC. Wendy and AnnMarie are attending the NC Potters Conference in Asheboro. Last night there was an opening reception for the conference exhibition and afterwards we decided to get some mexican food and a few margarita's at Burrito Brothers. When the waiter brought AnnMarie's vegetarian burrito we all fell into a fit of laughter. It was big enough to feed a family of four. She put her best effort into it, and brought the rest back to our house... perhaps she can have a midnight snack tonight.

Jeff is working at the conference today and tomorrow so I had the studio all to myself.

I dreamed about making these flower design baskets a few days ago. I took it as a sign that I should created them in real life. I liked them better in the dream. One ended up in the slop bucket.

Jeff recycled some clay the other night and threw a couple of pig bodies to test it out. I decided to turn them into sitting pigs. The piggy banks are still selling well in my Etsy shop and I thought it would be a good time to mix them up a little bit. Etsy has changed how you can advertise within the site now. It's like facebook ads, you can promote certain parts of your shop and set a weekly budget. I started to experiment with it and so far it has paid off. I also like that you can start and stop your ads at anytime... no big commitments. Etsy has definitely helped us get through the slower winter months. I am happy with the steady increase in sales and I like that I can do it from the comfort of my living room, with a warm fire burning in the wood stove.

on the home stretch

It's been long days in the studio this week... we have several orders to complete in time for Christmas shipping, which means we need to fire the gas kiln one more time very soon.
I spent the last two days carving flowers through slip, which also means I dreamed about carving through slip as well...

Sometimes dreams can bring new ideas. Last night I dreamed I was carving lino blocks of this flower design to make note cards. I have not done any lino block printing since high school and I woke up sort of excited about the idea. Like I really need one more thing to start experimenting with! While laying in bed contemplating the whole idea, I realized that carving some tiles with this design and raku firing them might work well. That's probably a more realistic endeavor right now.

I know we have been spending a lot of hours in the studio when the dishes start to pile up out there...

and I noticed this morning that I missed a few more cups!
