a little fun with porcelain...

A little cake decorating influence?

I had a little fun with porcelain this week and these were two of the results...

Kristen Keiffer meets Maureen Mills!

Not sure about how I will glaze these. Perhaps they will be ladies in waiting for a wood firing. Which would be my preference if I am patient.

The weather was great today. I spent much of it outdoors, preparing and loading pots for a bisque firing. I feel like spring is imminent... I even ordered some new light weight (but hopefully sturdy), studio shoes online today... my getting older feet just can't handle working in flip flops anymore!

Trying out new stuff

I have always been intrigued by ring jugs. I think it's the mystery of figuring out how they are made when you first see them. The other day I was getting bored with making casseroles and decided to give it a try...

I threw the ring form and THEN decided to do a little research on this form. What I found out was that the Moravian potters of North Carolina threw a fatter ring with a small circle, while others made them wide and thin, as I did. Of course mine just turned out that way because, as usual, I was just winging it!
I did however look at a gazillion images online to figure out what type of neck or handles that I wanted to add. I finished it off with some slip trailing. My plan is to bisque fire it and set it aside for a future wood and salt firing. It was a lot of fun to make and I might explore this form a little bit more.

The other thing I did this week was to throw a cake stand in one piece. This one is sort of small and low.

I am letting it dry slowly, upside down, to minimize warping. If this one is successful I will try throwing a larger one in one piece.

Sadly, with all this unseasonably warm weather, our daffodils are sporadically blooming. While seeing them makes you hopeful for real spring, it also means that come March, we won't have a yard full of blooms.

How can anyone deny global warming????

Wedding cake box

... that is what I decided to call this one

The slip has no color so it will a raised texture only. Jeff called it the wedding cookie box :-)

trying to stay motivated...

it's so muggy today the air feels thick... it has left me with very little ambition. but we did have a kiln to finish unloading...

unfortunately the bowl in the picture above has a spot of kiln crud in the bottom... it might be saved with a little grinding and re-firing.

some more of our collaborative mugs... Jeff threw the bodies, I handled and decorated them.

I am happy with these bowl & spoon jars. Jeff had a bunch of shino and turquoise bowl in this firing and most need to be re-fired. We have been having problems with iron pops with Highwater's Zella clay. Highwater claims that no one has ever complained about that before (but we know that isn't true!). It's extremely annoying and we have decided we are not going to be using it anymore.

Our inventory was getting low so it is good to have fresh pots for the shelves. next on the list is photographing some work for etsy... I have been an etsy slacker lately. Luckily I have been keeping the Co-op stocked! I hope all of you out in the blogosphere have been more productive than me today, which wouldn't be too hard a feat to attain!
