How did it get to be February already?

Piggy bank orders have slowed down a little in the last few weeks, but I was happy to get an order for a large bull pig bank. I always have fun making these and while I was at it I made a smaller one too.
My back has been bothering me lately, mostly late in the day when making piggy banks. I have been thinking that my work table is a little too low. It's a standard height, long cafeteria table which isn't the same height as the bench I worked on when we were in the log cabin. Last week I decided to buy bed risers to give it an extra 3" in height.

I found a set on Amazon for $7.99. They are neon green and are supposed to glow in the dark! The black ones were a few dollars more, but for the studio I really didn't care about the color. I haven't been out at night yet to see if they really do glow. I like the new height but haven't yet determined if it will help my back. It's the left side that starts to ache and since I am left handed, I think it may also be an "overuse" issue. Time will tell.

I have enjoyed the warm weather we have been having. It's great to walk each day without a coat, hat, and gloves. The downside is that many of the trees are blooming early, which probably means we won't have that big splash of color when we get closer to real Spring.

I usually walk on the streets around town, but occasionally head to the local park. They have a walking track that gets rather boring. There is also a nature trail loop that includes a good hill. I like to do that at least once during my laps, for a better cardio workout and to increase endurance. When I first started I had to take a break half way up the hill. Now I can do it without stopping... YAY for progress!

Warm Weather... Finally!

While my family and friends in New Hampshire are anticipating yet another snow storm, I have been busy planting tomatos and herbs, in 80 degree weather...

The garlic is coming up and I planted a couple of tomatos next to them. Our swiss chard survived the winter and is doing quite well now.

We do a lot of garden pots because the soil here has lots of roots and is hard to dig up. When Jeff comes back from S. Korea he may dig up a new area, on the side of the studio, to replant some of the basil, oregano, and rosemary that I put in pots.

While I have been busy in the garden, Jeff has been making teapots and tea bowls...

Tomorrow is a glazing day. We need to fire the gas kiln at the beginning of next week.

Jeff was smoking on Sunday...

Barbecue that is!
As I mentioned in a previous post, Jeff can cook. One of his specialties is barbecue (he is a southern boy after all). The fabulous weather and a really good sale on Boston Butt pork roast (.99 lb.), inspired Jeff to fire up the smoker on Sunday. I know I always brag about his barbecue... I think it's the BEST!

This is truly meat heaven.

Pulled pork sandwiches, slaw, salad, and yes... those are hushpuppies, made by this here Yankee. Confession time; I cheated and used a mix. Yummy just the same. I didn't even know that hushpuppies were anything but a brand of shoe until a few years ago!

Spring Cleaning in January

The weather has been amazing this weekend, making it perfect for studio cleaning. It was so warm that I was able to bring lots of studio stuff outside and hose it down. Our studio will never be the epitome of clean and neat, but it sure is looking better!

Yesterday I worked on one half of the studio. Mainly the half that I work in. Look at this clean wheel! It's definitely time to get the porcelain out.

Once again, everything that goes together, is together. I am going to try really hard to keep up with this from now on. It seems once we get into glazing is when the studio starts to become disorganized. At least I recognize where I fall short!

I don't think my work bench has looked this clear since the day we moved into this studio.
We also threw a ton of stuff away. Lots of pots that I thought I might refire, or use for something... most are GONE now. Odds and ends that I saved for who knows why... GONE. Today Jeff and I will tackle the other half of the studio, which includes the glazing area and pug mill.

The temperature on the kiln is 424 degrees this morning. That means new pots later today! Happy Sunday, I hope everyone is enjoying a warm January weekend, where ever you may be.

working together

Jeff made a whole bunch of mug bodies the other day and gave them to me to do as I pleased. I decided to brush the bottom halves with white slip and carve my flower design into them. Jeff likes to know how much time it takes to complete things so I set the stop watch on my iPod to see how long it took to draw the flower design and carve it... on average it was about 14 minutes. I am sure Jeff knows how long it takes him to throw the bodies but I didn't time myself on pulling handles (I probably don't want to know!).
The plan is to glaze these with shino inside and to the start of the design on the exterior and either the glossy green or blue glaze below. I didn't think I would enjoy working on collaborative things but have found that I quite enjoy it. We have a stamp with both our symbols for these pieces... when we are old (or dead) and famous, these pots with be highly collectible and will be seen on Antiques Roadshow... the owners will *gasp* at the value and run home to add a rider to their homeowners insurance!! Can you tell I have watched many episodes?

It was a pleasant day in the studio, we had the doors open since it was nearly 70 degrees outside. The warm weather brought in a good number of customers for a January weekend. In between the mugs and the customers, I took advantage of the warm air and rinsed off all the clay covered towels and aprons with the hose. This is a chore I don't usually get done in winter. It felt like a bonus and a good excuse to be outdoors. I could get used to these kind of winters!
