The Element of Surprise
Jeff helped David Stuempfle fire his wood kiln just prior to my mother's passing. We had a few pots in the kiln and this porcelain bowl was one of them. I really hadn't had any time to look at it, as I flew to New Hampshire a few days later. It definitely got hot! I like the way it warped in the firing and the flashing is gorgeous. Not everyone enjoys the wabi-sabi effects of wood firing, but I just love it.
I am going to hang on to this one for awhile.

yeah, sometimes warping is a good thing, in this case it's great
ReplyDeleteThe warping adds to the fluidity of the bowl. It wasn't until I read your text that I realized the warping wasn't intentional> I'd keep this one if it were me!
ReplyDeleteThat is a gorgeous bowl! I love that it has a natural shape. Personally, I would buy it over a perfectly round piece.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever read my listings on Etsy, many of them disclose that the rim is not perfectly round. Porcelain has a mind of it's own. Smartcat used a term that I think describes it in a lovely way. Fluidity.
A good surprise from a kiln. That is news! Lovely bowl with nice effects from the wood without being too crusty to use.
ReplyDeleteI just helped load a wood kiln with Jim Sandefur who intentionally distorted his bowls into a similar shape. He was explaining how he creates the shape after throwing then binds the pot in plastic wrap so it holds it's shape while drying. He does this to help prevent the pot from going BACK to perfect in the kiln.
ReplyDeleteGo figure.
This is a great looking bowl, I love it.
special indeed :)
ReplyDeleteA lovely bowl, a gift of earth, of hand and of fire! Really great to see wood fired porcelain, it makes me want to abandon growing crystals for a while and get my wood fired kiln out of hibernation!
ReplyDeleteMichele, that is beautiful and a keeper! Over the years I have sold so many pots I should have kept and now hanging on to a few, not many but a few. Kiln kissed for sure!
